ARSENAL'S DEFENDER 2011-2012

3. Bacary Sagna

Bacary has clocked up well over 150 appearances for Arsenal and yet it's hard to remember him making a single glaring error since his arrival in the summer of 2007. That pretty much sums up the French right-back - he is Arsenal's Mr Reliable.

Bacary took to English football like a duck to water, proving himself to be an exemplary defender. His positional awareness, tough tackling and aerial power have strengthened Arsenal's right side and few wingers get the better of him

The Frenchman has also impressed on the front foot. Neat and tidy in possession, his willingness to overlap gives Arsenal the width they need to stretch defences and he is one of the finest crossers at the Club.
Bacary Sagna was a 'non-homegrown' player in Arsenal's official 2010/11 Premier League squad.

5. Thomas Vermaelen

Thomas spent most of last season on the sidelines but, on the evidence on his first year in English football, he looks set for a long and prosperous Arsenal career.

The Belgian was a relative unknown when he arrived from Ajax in the summer of 2009 as a replacement for Kolo Toure but he is now one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Thomas' tackling ability and willingness to attack the ball make him a natural leader at the back and he is more than capable at the other end too, scoring eight goals in his debut campaign - including a couple of long-range specials against Wigan and Blackburn.
That said, Thomas has made it clear that he would swap his goals for more clean sheets - the true currency of a title-winning defender. Expect him to make up for lost time this season.

6. Laurent Koscielny

Laurent signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2010 after a meteoric rise through French football.

The centre back was voted Ligue 2 Player of the Year in 2009, moved to Lorient that summer and excelled in his only season in the French top flight before earning a transfer to Emirates Stadium.
Laurent is a quick-thinking centre back who reads the game exceptionally well and can turn defence into attack in an instant. He is comfortable in possession, loves to bring the ball out from the back and has settled in fast.
An injury to Thomas Vermaelen thrust Laurent into the spotlight in his debut season - only Jack Wilshere made more appearances. But the centre back acquitted himself well and even contributed some vital goals.

Although born in France, the uncapped defender would also qualify to represent the Poland national team as a result of his family roots.
Laurent Koscielny is a 'non-homegrown' player in Arsenal's official Premier League squad.

18. Sebastien Squillaci

After centre backs William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mikael Silvestre all left in the summer of 2010, Arsène Wenger drafted in Sebastien to reinforce his defensive options.

The vastly-experienced international, who has represented France over 20 times, made 32 appearances during a low-key but solid debut season in the Premier League.

His knowhow was an asset to the Arsenal back-line alongside the younger pair of Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny.

Sebastien was part of AS Monaco's impressive Champions League run in 2004, helping the side reach the Final by beating Real Madrid and Chelsea en route.
Sebastien Squillaci was a 'non-homegrown' player in Arsenal's official 2010/11 Premier League squad.

20. Johan Djourou

Johan made serene progress through the ranks at Arsenal and finally realised the potential everyone associated with the Club knew he possessed during 2010/11.

The Swiss defender made his Arsenal debut as long ago as October 2004 but, despite showing plenty of promise, his progress at Emirates Stadium has regularly been checked by injury. He certainly made up for lost time last season.

Johan is an accomplished centre back. He is assured with the ball at his feet, relishes a battle and has the pace and aerial ability to excel.

He has taken a traditional path to the first team, completing a loan spell at Birmingham in 2008 before making his mark in the Premier League. Now Johan wants to cement his place at the heart of the defence.

25. Carl Jenkinson

Carl joined the Club from League One side Charlton Athletic in June and settled in well during pre-season.
He linked up with Arsène Wenger's squad on their summer tour of Asia and impressed at right back where his tough tackling and willingness to overlap caught the eye.

The promising defender, who featured nine times for Charlton’s first team, is predominantly a right back but can also play at centre half.

Although born in England, Carl qualifies to represent both England and Finland through his mother.

The 6ft 1ins youngster has already represented both countries at youth level and last season captained Finland Under-19s.

28. Kieran Gibbs

Kieran came through the Arsenal ranks as a winger but has since made his senior England debut as a left back.

Arsène Wenger moved Kieran into the back four after he returned from a loan spell with Norwich in 2008 and it proved to be a masterstroke.

Kieran has all the attributes required to be a world-class full back - pace, intelligence, anticipation and sound technique. And his natural attacking instincts make him a valuable outlet when Arsenal go forward.

Kieran was an able deputy for Gael Clichy before the Frenchman left for Manchester City and will get his chance to make the position his own this season.
Kieran Gibbs was under the age of 21 on January 1, 2010 and therefore it was not necessary to name him in Arsenal's official 2010/11 Premier League squad.

30. Armand Traore

Arsenal are spoilt for choice when it comes to talented young left-sided players and Armand proves the point.

The Frenchman has had to wait patiently for his first-team opportunities with Gael Clichy and Kieran Gibbs also at Emirates Stadium but a loan spell at Portsmouth in 2008/09 readied him for the rigours of the Premier League.

Armand is quick, strong and positive. He loves to run at the opposition and is one of Arsenal's most accurate crossers, as Nicklas Bendtner will testify. The Dane has benefited from more than one fine Traore delivery.

Signed from Monaco in 2006, Armand has represented France at Under-17, Under-18s and Under-19 level.
Armand Traore was under the age of 21 on January 1, 2010 and therefore it was not necessary to name him in Arsenal's official 2010/11 Premier League squad.
